What to do this Weekend – Bastille Day Edition

Happy Bastille Day everyone!

Even though we think the French hate all us Americans, I do like the French. Especially their crepes, cheese and champagne.

Bastille Day celebrates the storming of the Bastille on July 14th, 1789. Which was, by all accounts, a symbolic show of the common people rising up against the absolutist monarchy.

Truth be told, I would have no idea about it if it weren’t for my roommate’s yearly Bastille celebration, a day saved for making crepes, listening to Edith Piaf, watching Jacques Tati films and playing croquet. I received this email recently, which reminded me.

Don’t be sad if you didn’t receive the above invite in your digital mailbox, because there are tons of other Bastille Day celebrations to be had.

Tonight, July 14th – Jacques Bistro – 20 Prince St. (btwn Elizabeth and Mott), starting at 6 pm you can enjoy a French feast with cocktail pitchers. At midnight the party moves to the basement, where there will be burlesque, and absinthe-tinged drinks. Watch out for the green fairy.

Tomorrow, July 15th – French Films On The Green present La Gloire de mon Père (My Father’s Glory), the story of a young boy as he explores Provence on a summer vacation. Free event, and subtitles included.

Saturday, July 16th – starting at 2 pm at Littlefield – 622 Degraw St. btwn 3rd and 4th avenue – Skint presents an afternoon Bastille Day celebration. Featuring burlesque performers dressed as Marie Antoinette and cabaret singer, Mira Stroika. Free gin until 3 pm, and $3 Brooklyn Brewery Summer Ale. Check here for more info.

Au revoir!
