To Thine Own Self Be True

Polonius, that old busybody fool from Hamlet, may have been wrong on many counts. But he had one thing right. That sense of knowing who you are and remaining faithful to that.

So many people in our generation suffer from a crisis of self. They don’t know what they want from this life or this world, so they don’t know what to do with themselves. Beyond that, the not-knowing makes them think that perhaps they are not fully formed as human beings. When at a social gathering with people in my age group, I usually notice two things, 1) everyone wants to know what everyone else is doing and 2) usually, a person’s job has nothing to do with what that person is ‘doing’ with themselves. The ‘doing’ of independent projects has overtaken the career path as the ultimate place to express your passions.

The New York Times recently ran an article along a similar vein, more about the concept of self and how it relates to our own personal value propositions of what is good and bad.

Also, Internet Week is upon us, starting in NYC today. What? You can pay a bunch of money to have conversations about where the worldwideweb is going with people who know a lot more than you do, or a lot less? Really? Really!
