It was late night, I was at my parents house watching television. The room was dark, and suddenly punctuated by strangely familiar music. Suddenly, I was a child, in Dubai, watching a movie with my parents and our friends. When a masked Mohammad Rafi came on screen, everyone jumped up and started dancing and doing the twist. It was to this song, which was incredibly popular in Hindi-speaking Dubai. Now it’s in a Heineken commercial. Life moves inexorably on it’s path, to where? I don’t know.
But hotdamn I love this song!

I love this song. It is pure kitsch. The combination of India’s influences and American Mod Rock is just a kick. I have this song on my iPod. Bet Rafi would never have dreamed that some American white guy in 2011 would be listening to his music from the 60s! It is a crazy world, man.
But the Heiniken commercial that brought this song to my attention is yet another example of the stupidity of Hollywood/TV. When I first heard this song it was obvious to me that it was of India influence. Yet the whole commercial is filled with people that look like they come from Thailand or the Philippines! Dots.
