Holy Adbusters!
About 10 days ago, protestors were beginning to gather at Zuccotti Park by Wall Street for a new movement. It was called, Occupy Wall Street, and it’s whole M.O. was about a peaceful “fuck you” to all the various ways the super-rich have completely screwed over the “pretty normal”.
Don’t get it? Well think of all the societal changes we’ve been witnessing lately, a super-rich guy writing an article about how he pays less taxes than his housekeeper, college kids all moving back in with their parents, the incredible unemployment rate, politicians fighting over shit that just doesn’t matter, oh, and did I mention unemployment? Sure, in 2008 we were laughing and calling it “fun”employment, but that shit can seriously bog someone down.
Or lots of someones. As found on the Adbusters site: “Occupy Wall St #OCCUPYWALLSTREET is a people powered movement for democracy that began in America on September 17 with an encampment in the financial district of New York City. Inspired by the Egyptian Tahrir Square uprising and the Spanish acampadas, we vow to end the monied corruption of our democracy … join us! We’re now in DAY 10.”
The movement received a lot of press recently because of some policemen ridiculously macing a deaf women in the face, one who was not inciting violence in any way whatsoever.
Incredibly, this recent tactic has only brought more supporters to the cause. I hope something incredibly useful comes out of this, a taskforce to fine those that brought upon the economic downturn, new habits to take over some of the old, and maybe, finally, some accountability for all of our own actions. Eh?
